You get two types of cluster's (instruments panels).

Firstly the older technology: Mechanical clusters has numerous moving parts that needs to be lubricated for parts to move freely. In most instances the parts working the odometer would run dry and break apart.

Secondly with newer technology: Electronic clusters are fitted by manufacturers because it is cheaper and easier than mechanical clusters, but they to have problems of their own. Some of the components in newer cars can get damaged by jump starting the vehicle, an overcharging alternator and water condensation inside the cluster. The result of this can be anything from the cluster not working entirely to program corruption. In these cases we re- program the cluster with new settings and correct mileage.
